Tulikivi investigating opportunities to exploit talc deposit in Suomussalmi

20.4.2017

Tulikivi Corporation has decided to investigate opportunities to exploit the talc deposits in Suomussalmi. Tulikivi Corporation’s mining concession in Suomussalmi has talc deposits that are believed to be suitable for talc production.

The purpose of the study is to assess in detail the suitability of the talc raw material for the production of various grades of talc and to specify the size of the talc deposit suitable for production.

Depending on the outcome of the study, the company intends to begin exploiting the deposit by either developing its own operations, collaborating with a partner or selling the mining project.

Tulikivi currently has eight mining concessions in Eastern Finland and Kainuu. The soapstone used for fireplaces typically contains about 50 per cent talc, which is why the company has in the past carried out extensive talc deposit surveys in conjunction with surveys of soapstone deposits.

The company has operated a plant focusing on lining stone products at the Suomussalmi deposit since the year 2000.
